Economic Downturn SEM Strategies
ClickZ Network
This holiday season, sharpen your keyword searches and focus on attracting local shoppers, suggests Erik Dafforn. Although increases in gas prices have mildly subsided, they're still above $3 in most parts of the country, and many shoppers will first search online for bargains close by.

Consider shifting some additional PPC effort and resources to geographically targeted local campaigns. Highlight the inventory of the store nearest the consumer and target your copy to appeal to someone with car keys in hand, which sounds like good advice to attract consumers going green by conserving fuel.

Don't bury important information. Make sure consumers can find return policies and telephone numbers on your site in as few searches as possible. There's nothing more annoying than going to a company's Web site and having to search, search and search again for information needed. - Read the whole story...

PageRank Sculpting: Finding the Benefits
SEOmozBlog
Advice floating through the SEO world suggests that PageRank sculpting should be used only when all other methods for improving SEO are complete. But in a recent post, Rand Fishkin strongly disagrees. He believe using "nofollow to flow link juice is something that should come up at the same time site architecture and link architecture does." That means when you're trying to figure out how to get the search engines to index all your content and find new content as quickly as possible.

Fishkin lays out several steps to help you test and watch PageRank sculpting, supported by nofollow, in action. They include creating a new page in a test environment, pointing enough links to this new page to get it indexed in the three major search engines, creating between 10 and 20 links on the new page that point to completely unique pages, and waiting for the engines to visit and see these new pages. - Read the whole story...

Guide to Keyword Search, Part IV
Search Engine Guide
Part IV provides steps that can help you uncover important core terms. Stoney deGeyter suggests that site owners use a variety of keyword research tools to ensure getting a range of data. Select a core term from your list and plug it into the tool's search box. Scan the results and look for core terms you don't already have on your list.

Aside from looking for new core terms, you also want to look for new words that can be used to create new core terms. DeGeyter provides an example. If "waterproof wheeled bag" is on the page, you can use "wheeled bag" and "waterproof bag" or even "water proof bag." This gives you one or two new core terms to add to your core term list. - Read the whole story...

New Study Suggests Brain Gains From Searching Online
CNN.com
A study at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) measured brain activity of older adults as they searched the Web to see if Google, Yahoo, Microsoft and others can make you smarter. Dr Gary Small, a professor at the Semel Institute for Neuroscience and Human Behavior at UCLA., recruited two groups of people. One had minimal computer experience, while the other had lots.

Twenty-four people were divided into the two groups, similar in sex, educational achievements and age, ranging from ages 55 to 78. Their only difference was their technological experience.

It turns out members of the technologically advanced group had more than twice the neural activation while searching online, compared with their less experienced counterparts. Activity occurred in the region of the brain that controls decision-making and complex reasoning, according to Small's study, which appears in the American Journal of Geriatric Psychiatry. - Read the whole story...

Five Basic Search Optimization Rules To Live By
SEO Scoop
Here are five strategic goals you need to shoot for to help get your Web site noticed. These easy to understand instructions provide insight on how and why to optimize your site's Web pages.

The recommendations start with placing a link to your new page on one frequently crawled by Google, checking cache to determine the frequency of the crawl.
